Corruption Claims Have Never Prevented Parties From Winning Elections in Ghana – Awal Mohammed

Awal Mohammed has argued that corruption allegations and convictions have never been enough on their own to determine the outcome of elections in Ghana.

Reacting to political commentary surrounding Ken Ofori-Atta, the NPP communicator said Ghana’s electoral history shows that voters often consider a broader range of issues when choosing leaders.

“If mere allegations of wrongdoing could derail a party’s flagbearer, the NDC would never have won an election after Rawlings,” he wrote.

Awal pointed to several corruption-related convictions involving public officials under previous administrations, arguing that such cases did not stop political parties from remaining competitive at the polls.

“Yet, the NDC used corruption as a campaign tool to win elections,” he stated.

He also questioned the focus on Ofori-Atta, noting that the former Finance Minister has not been convicted by any court.

“Ken Ofori-Atta is not even standing trial in Ghana,” he added.

According to Awal, political debates should focus on policies, leadership, and performance rather than assumptions that allegations against one individual automatically translate into electoral consequences for an entire party.
