President John Mahama has disclosed that he regularly monitors complaints about government performance on social media platforms, including TikTok, and forwards issues raised by users to his ministers for attention.
Speaking during an interaction with Ghanaians living in Russia, Mahama said social media had become an important source of real-time information about challenges facing communities across the country.
He revealed that he sometimes comes across videos and complaints online and immediately contacts the relevant government officials to find out what is being done.
“Sometimes I go on the media and I see something and I call the minister. I say, ‘Hey, my friend, what is happening in your sector?’” he said.
Mahama cited an incident involving a bridge in the Ashanti Region, which he said had been affected by activities of illegal miners and flooding.
According to him, he came across information about the incident while in Russia and forwarded it to the regional minister, asking him to investigate.
He said the minister later informed him that a blocked channel was responsible for the problem and that an excavator was being sent to clear it to allow water to flow.
The President also mentioned complaints about roads, saying he forwards such concerns to the officials responsible for the affected areas.
“So, all your TikToks and things, don’t think I don’t see them. I see them,” he told the gathering.
Mahama said the new media had made it easier for government to receive information from citizens and respond to problems as they emerge.
