England will be more worried about Antoine Semenyo – Michael Essien

Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien believes Antoine Semenyo will be Ghana’s biggest attacking threat when the Black Stars face England in their second Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show before Tuesday’s game at Gillette Stadium, Essien said Semenyo is the player England should be most concerned about.

“England will be more worried about Antoine Semenyo,” Essien said.

Essien, who is now an assistant coach at Danish club FC Nordsjaelland, also praised the forward for settling quickly after his move to Manchester City in January and for his strong performances during the 2025/26 season.

“His journey has been very good so far. But what surprises me a little bit is you know, when players switch in January transfer, it takes them a while to adjust to their teammates in the system, but he looks like he’s already been there,” he added.

Semenyo played a key role in Ghana’s opening match against Panama. He delivered an impressive performance and won the Man of the Match award as the Black Stars secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
