Ernest Norgbey explains why Parliament is cautious about parallel probe into World Cup visa scandal

Youth and Sports Committee Chairman Ernest Norgbey has said Parliament is cautious about launching a parallel investigation into the 2026 World Cup visa scandal because it could politicise the case and undermine efforts to hold those responsible accountable.

Norgbey explained that the committee had already summoned the Sports Minister to answer questions about the matter and requested additional documents, which had yet to be submitted at the time of the interview.

He said the committee was preparing to return the issue to the table for further discussion by the end of the week or the following week.

“The CID is investigating it, and we are to also investigate, there will be some kind of conflict,” Norgbey said in an interview on Joy News.

He argued that allowing the relevant investigative authorities to work without political interference could improve the chances of identifying and punishing people involved in alleged wrongdoing.

“I would have preferred, sincerely, that the matter is left for those people who are investigating it so that we don’t do politics with it at our level as politicians,” he added.

Norgbey said Ghana had repeatedly encountered similar problems during major sporting tournaments and called for those responsible to be identified and punished rather than allowing public and political disputes to derail the process.

“It is high time we fish out those individuals and punish them, but not to politicise it,” he said.
