Extortion allegations immaterial in discussions on GoldBod losses—Kwasi Kwarteng

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Kwasi Kwarteng, has stated that Sammy Gyamfi’s allegations of extortion is immaterial to the substantive issue at hand.

According to him, the substantive issue is the loss recorded in the gold trade, which should have the needed focus.

Kwasi Kwarteng, who made these known while addressing the GoldBod issue on social media, said “Assuming without admitting that the extortion allegation by Sammy Gyamfi against Hon.Alexander kwamena Afenyo-Markin has any merit, it remains irrelevant, immaterial and inconsequential to the substantive questions he raised about the reported losses.

Equally, bringing GoldBod into the debate is entirely legitimate, given its central role in the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

The substantive issues of the loss must not be lost in the distractions”.

The minority in Parliament has exposed losses made by GoldBod in 2025. The Minority is backed by the 2025 IMF report that suggests that there were losses to the tune of Ghc 22 billion.

This has been denied by the chief executive officer of the company, Sammy Gyamfi, who has said they rather made surpluses per the Auditor-General’s report.

In making his point, Sammy Gyamfi indicated that the Minority leader, who is at the forefront of the calls for accountability, is doing so because of extortion.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, in responding to the allegation, said “On the defamatory statements made against me personally, I intend to pursue the appropriate legal remedies. Meanwhile, my attention, and that of the Caucus I lead, remains firmly focused on the programme, the decisions taken and the public funds involved”.
