Ghanaian Consultant Neurosurgeon, Isabella Opoku has shared the story of a former National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) contestant who secured a full university scholarship, while encouraging students to seek guidance from people with proven experience.
In a social media post, Dr Opoku recounted meeting the student after a fire destroyed her girls’ dormitory and all her learning materials during her final year of senior high school.
She said she later learnt the student had been a backup contestant for the National Science and Maths Quiz and remained in touch with her, offering mentorship on career choices and scholarship opportunities.
According to Dr Opoku, the student, who was interested in engineering and computer science, eventually gained admission to a university on a full scholarship.
Reflecting on the experience, she wrote, “I asked myself why I keep bumping into these NSMQ girls ‘accidentally’, or my spirit is with this ‘harmful show’,” a remark that appeared to reference recent public discussions about the value of the competition.
Addressing senior high school students, she added: “Take advice from people who have RECEIPTS not opinions! Your associations matter. Follow who know road!!!
