President John Mahama has stated that his government is committed to the fight against illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey and action against illegal miners is in full swing.
In his message on the State of the Nation (SONA) to Parliament last Friday, he revealed that some 114 dockets covering hundreds of persons accused of illegal mining are before the courts and that specialised prosecuting teams have been deployed to galamsey hotspots to ensure the swift prosecution of the cases.
The fight against illegal mining was one of the major campaign messages of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) in the 2024 General Elections but critics say the NDC Government has not done enough in the fight upon assuming the reins of power.
But President Mahama has defended the record of his government, stressing that his government is making strides in the fight.
