GES directs regional directors to verify schools for 20% deprived-area allowance

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed all regional directors to verify data on communities and schools identified as deprived areas ahead of the implementation of a 20% basic salary allowance for teachers serving in those locations.

In a letter dated October 19, 2026, and signed by Director-General Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, the GES asked regional directors to confirm the identified communities, schools, and the number of teachers currently working at, or expected to be posted to, the schools.

The classification considers factors such as access to electricity, clean water, healthcare, financial services, sanitation and basic education, as well as poverty levels and distances pupils travel to school.

The GES directed the regional directors to submit the verified data electronically by October 23, 2026.

“Kindly ensure that the data is thoroughly verified and submitted on or before the stipulated deadline,” Prof. Davis stated in the letter.
