Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has announced a new welfare initiative to provide healthcare support for former Ghana national team players facing medical challenges.
Speaking at the 32nd Ordinary Session of the GFA Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, Simeon-Okraku unveiled the GFA Foundation Player Welfare Initiative.
Under the programme, the GFA will commit US$50,000 annually for four years to support the healthcare needs of eligible former national team players.
The initiative will see the GFA invest a total of US$200,000 over the four-year period.
Simeon-Okraku said the programme was introduced to honour former national team players who dedicated their careers to representing Ghana.
“Our former national team players brought immense pride and glory to Ghana through their dedication, sacrifice and service to the nation,” he said.
“Many of them continue to face significant health challenges long after their playing careers have ended, and it is only fitting that the football family stands with them during these difficult moments.”
The GFA Foundation will set aside US$50,000 each year to create a dedicated welfare fund to assist eligible former national players with their healthcare needs.
The initiative marks one of the GFA’s major direct interventions aimed at improving the welfare of former national stars.
