Ghana exit WAFCON after 2-1 loss to Malawi

Ghana’s Black Queens have been knocked out of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 after losing 2-1 to Malawi in a dramatic quarter-final.

The defeat ends Ghana’s hopes of reaching the WAFCON semi-finals. However, the Black Queens still have a chance to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Malawi, meanwhile, continued their impressive run at the tournament and moved closer to making history.

Ghana went into the quarter-final hoping to build on their strong campaign and take another step towards securing a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

However, Malawi proved to be a tough opponent.

The Black Queens fought until the final whistle and created several chances, but they could not score enough goals to change the result.

Despite the defeat, Ghana’s World Cup hopes are still alive.

The Black Queens will now face Côte d’Ivoire in the next stage of the qualification process.

Ghana must win that match to reach the inter-confederation play-offs.

If they beat Côte d’Ivoire, they will then need to win two more matches in the inter-confederation play-offs to secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
