Ghana@69: Ghana is bigger than any one of us – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama used Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary to reflect on the country’s political journey and urge citizens to protect national unity.

Speaking at the national celebration on March 6 at the Jubilee House, Mahama said Ghana’s democratic system has endured because citizens and political leaders have learned to manage differences peacefully.

“Our democracy has endured because we have learned to compete without destroying, to disagree without hatred, and to transfer power peacefully,” he said.

The president paid tribute to past leaders who have contributed to the country’s development since independence.

He noted that each administration has played a role in shaping the Ghana of today.

“Every administration, regardless of its political inclination, has played its part in building the nation we proudly call Ghana,” he stated.

Mahama also reminded citizens that independence brought freedom but also responsibility.

“Freedom demands responsibility,” he said. “We must reestablish discipline in how we manage public resources, how we follow the law, and how we treat one another.”

He urged Ghanaians to place the country’s interest above political or personal considerations.

“Above all, we must place country above party, above tribe and above personal interest,” Mahama said.
