Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has criticised his successor, Dr. Dominic Ayine, over the swift discontinuation of multiple criminal cases involving high-profile members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Addressing the media in Accra on Friday, February 14, Dame suggested that the pattern of case withdrawals signaled an attempt to absolve accused officials of wrongdoing.
“Dr. Ayine was sworn in as Attorney-General on January 22, 2025. By January 24, he had abandoned the state’s appeal in Republic vs. Ato Forson & 2 Others. In less than a week, he withdrew cases involving Dr. Stephen Opuni, Ofosu-Ampofo, and Dr. Johnson Asiama, leading to acquittals and discharges,” Dame stated.
He argued that such actions raised concerns about the Attorney General’s priorities, questioning whether legal decisions were being influenced by political considerations rather than the broader interest of justice.
Dame’s remarks have reignited discussions about prosecutorial independence, with critics accusing the government of selectively handling corruption cases while supporters defend Ayine’s right to reassess legal proceedings.
