Hopeson Adorye calls for martial law to tackle galamsey in Ghana

Leading member of the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, says Ghana needs to consider martial law if it wants to end illegal mining.

Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, he argued that current approaches are insufficient to address the problem.

“Until we have that political will to say that we are declaring a martial law, there’s no way that we can use just one year, two years, and then fight galamsey. It’s not possible,” he said.

According to Adorye, stronger measures are needed to deal with those involved in illegal mining activities.

He said the destruction of water bodies and farmlands requires urgent action and that the country should adopt a tougher approach if it wants lasting results.

Adorye maintained that ending galamsey would require political commitment beyond short-term interventions.
