How Bernice Offei’s struggle with reading glasses inspired ‘Life Is Short’

Gospel music legend Bernice Offei once revealed that a simple experience from her childhood became the inspiration behind her massive hit song, “Life Is Short.”

In a throwback interview that has resurfaced after her death, Offei recalled how she used to laugh at her parents when they struggled to read without glasses as they grew older.

“As a teenager, I remember when I was growing up, and my parents, at a point in their life, when most adults tend to find difficulties in reading, they either have to push their book far away or else use reading glasses,” she said.

Offei said she did not understand why her parents needed glasses to read and found the situation funny at the time.

Years later, she found herself experiencing the same thing.

“My kids didn’t understand why I was doing that. And they were also finding it funny and were actually laughing at me,” she recalled.

That experience made her realise how quickly life passes.

“And I realised that, hey, it was just like yesterday. That actually told me the truth about life, that it’s really short,” she said.

Offei explained that the experience also reminded her that people have limited time on earth and should make good use of their lives.

“We really don’t have all the time here on earth. We have a purpose here on earth. God has brought us here for a purpose. And we need to make sure that we give a good account of our lives,” she said.
