Ghanaian musician Wanlov the Kubolor has revealed that his music career did not begin in a studio but in school.
During his conversation with Kafui Dey, monitored by MyNewsGh, he said school disco nights were where he first performed.
“That’s where my music started for sure,” he said.
Although he had loved music earlier, secondary school gave him a stage.
“At disco was the first place I started performing.”
He explained how his nickname “Spooky” was born during an English literature class.
The class was discussing *Phantom of the Opera*. When asked what the lesson was about, he responded quickly.
“I just said, ‘Oh, something spooky.’”
Though he was almost punished, classmates defended him. Soon, students across campus began calling him “Spooky.”
“The word spread. As I was walking through the compound, people were shouting, ‘Spooky! Spooky!’”
Music also became serious outside campus.
He and his friends would visit a small village studio run by a producer called King Sounds. Recording was basic.
“He would play a beat from one cassette. There was a mic. Another cassette was recording. That’s how we made tapes.”
A senior student encouraged him to write his own lyrics instead of rapping other people’s songs.
“If you write your own lyrics, you can rap it too,” he was told.
Wanlov also became known for dancing.
“If you went anywhere and I did the moonwalk, game over,” he said, laughing.
He expressed admiration for Michael Jackson, whose dance style influenced him.
Looking back, Wanlov sees those school moments as the foundation of his creative life.
“That’s where everything started bubbling,” he said.
