How my investigations on sanitation were rejected – Journalist

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has described previous challenges he faced while reporting on sanitation and public contracts, citing institutional resistance and media rejection.

In a letter to President John Dramani Mahama, he referenced earlier investigations that were reportedly met with opposition.

“In 2017, the media ganged up against me when I investigated and published the ‘Robbing the Assemblies’ documentary series,” he said.

He noted that despite the backlash, the investigation later influenced the cancellation of a contract he described as fraudulent.

He also said his later work on sanitation-related issues was rejected by mainstream media, forcing him to publish some findings on alternative platforms.

“One trusted media organisation told me that Zoomlion had paid them to cover the COVID-19 fumigation exercises, so they could not publish a negative story,” he stated.

He added that investigative journalism in such sectors often faces financial and institutional pressure, which affects publication decisions.
