Former GBA President Yaw Acheampong Boafo has spoken out on the importance of legal expertise in Ghana’s constitutional review process.
During an interview with Paul Adom-Otchere on Metro TV monitored by MyNewsGh, Boafo emphasized that practical experience in Ghanaian law is critical for understanding the nuances of the Constitution.
“One of the greatest problems we face is trying to westernize our constitutional experience,” Boafo said.
“The daily grind of the courts and legal practice opens your mind to social and cultural practices that you cannot experience unless you are part of the system.”
He argued that constitutional review is not just about academic knowledge. “I would rather someone who practises the law, deals with the processes daily, than a civil society person,” he noted.
Boafo praised past leaders of review committees, including Professor Raymond Atuguba and Professor Albert K. Fiadjoe for combining scholarship with practical legal experience. He said current efforts, while commendable, lack the same direct connection to Ghanaian legal realities.
