If people believe you have failed, they will vote against you – Professor

A senior researcher at Kumasi Technical University, Professor Smart Sarpong has said voter perception is a decisive factor in election outcomes.

“I think generally what we must assess are the strengths and weaknesses of any government,” he said on JoyNews’ AM Show.

“But fundamentally, governments lose elections based on three things. One is perceived as a failure. If people believe you have failed, they will vote against you.”

He also highlighted the danger of disappointment among party loyalists.

“Supporters whose expectations are not met may choose not to vote at all. And in elections, failing to vote is effectively the same as voting for the opposition,” he added.

Professor Sarpong noted that in tightly contested elections, voter apathy among party supporters can be a determining factor.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining public confidence to prevent disengagement.
