It’s only in Ghana where people who steal state money are glorified – Journalist reacts to Miracles Aboagye’s arrest

Investigative journalist Erastus Asare Donkor has criticised the public reaction to the arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, questioning why some young Ghanaians defend politicians accused of misusing state resources.

Reacting to the arrest of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications officer by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Erastus argued that some citizens appear more concerned about protecting members of their political parties than demanding accountability.

“It’s only in Ghana where people who steal state money are glorified. The young people on the streets whose monies have been stolen, gang up and demonstrate when suspects are arrested,” he said.

According to him, the focus should be on ensuring that public funds are protected rather than supporting individuals based on political affiliation.

“They are not worried that state funds have been stolen but they rather want it stolen by their party people so they go and beg for pieces of it,” he added.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye was arrested by EOCO on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the Accra International Airport with assistance from immigration officials. His arrest is reportedly linked to investigations into alleged corruption related to his time at the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation.

The NPP has since raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding his arrest, with the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, calling for his release and questioning the decision to detain him over the weekend.
