Ghanaian comedian Jacinta Ocansey has said she has cut several people out of her life because she does not tolerate people who undermine her work or fail to support her ambitions.
Jacinta said she does not spend much time trying to convince people who constantly give her negative energy.
“I’ve cut a lot of people off. I mean, I don’t waste time to cut people off once you give me that energy,” she said on Joy Prime.
She explained that she pays attention to how people behave towards her and can tell when someone is deliberately trying to discourage her.
She recalled an experience from a past relationship where her partner’s friend made a negative comment about her comedy.
Jacinta said what concerned her was not only the comment itself but the fact that her partner did not appear to see anything wrong with it.
“I was like, okay, if your friend could say that then maybe and you didn’t actually see anything wrong with that kind of comment, and that was the end of that,” she said.
She said there have also been people around her whom she expected to support her but instead made her feel as though they were holding her back.
“If you’re not supporting me, you’re also not encouraging me. So, I think I know how to read between the lines and tell that this one, it’s like you’re trying to take me 10 steps back or so,” she said.
Jacinta, however, said she remains grateful to the people who have supported her, including her family, production crew, friends, industry colleagues and the media.
She said she would rather focus on those people than waste her energy on people who do not believe in her.
