Joey B has revealed that the name that made him famous did not come from family, friends or music.
According to the rapper, the nickname was given to him by a stranger while he was still in school.
He recalled helping a foreign visitor find his school’s administration block when the man suddenly called him Joey.
“I asked him why he called me Joey and he said, ‘Because you look like a Joey,’” he recounted.
The name quickly caught on among his friends and eventually became part of his identity.
The rapper admitted he later searched for the meaning of the name and was surprised by what he found.
“I checked the dictionary and it said little kangaroo,” he said with laughter.
Today, the nickname remains one of the most recognisable names in Ghanaian music, all because of a brief encounter with a stranger.
