June recorded highest monthly rainfall in Ghana’s history – Interior Minister

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has told Parliament that Ghana recorded unusually high rainfall levels in June 2026 following the floods that affected parts of Accra on June 29.

Addressing the House on Tuesday, June 30, he said data from the Ghana Meteorological Agency showed that the country experienced one of its heaviest rainfall patterns in recent years.

He said, “Mr. Speaker, in the nutshell, to say that this was something that was a real difficulty for us as a country, I must admit.”

He added, “If you look at the statistics that we received from the Ghana Meteorological Agency, it clearly states that in the month of June, we normally expect a lot of rains.”

He continued, “But what happened yesterday gave us 169.2 millimetres of water, and this is the fourth largest volume of water in a day since 1995.”

He further stated, “For the month of June, we had a total of 593.2 millimetres of water. It is the highest our country has ever received in its history in one month.”

He noted that previous records included 420.6 millimetres in 2002 and 380.3 millimetres in 2015, adding that the figures would be submitted to Parliament for further consideration.
