TV3 host Keminni Amanor challenged NDC communicator Rashid Tanko Computer to provide evidence of political party membership as the two debated the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) objections to Emelia Afi Agbenyo’s appointment as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).
During the discussion, Tanko cited the backgrounds of existing commissioners while arguing that the NPP should not single out Agbenyo over alleged political connections.
Amanor cautioned him against identifying individuals as party members without establishing that they belonged to the parties he associated them with.
“Being appointed by Nana Akufo-Addo does not mean that they are members of the party because he was president at the time. He had the prerogative to do what he did by law,” Amanor said.
She added that the same standard of evidence should apply when discussing Agbenyo and other appointees.
“If you’re going to name names, we have to be sure that you know that they are members of the party,” she told Tanko.
The exchange came as Tanko defended Mahama’s appointments and rejected suggestions that the NDC had adopted the same approach it previously criticised under the NPP government.
Amanor’s rebuttal was on the distinction between being appointed by a president from a particular party and being a confirmed member of that party.
