Ken didn’t move to stay in US, Ahiagbah says he applied for status to continue treatment

Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has explained the circumstances surrounding Ken Ofori-Atta’s immigration status in the United States during an interview on Channel One TV.

He said the application to adjust status in the US was linked to medical treatment and compliance with immigration requirements.

“Ken’s attempt to adjust his status in America is not to stay in America. It is to obtain leave so he can focus on his treatment,” he said.

Ahiagbah noted that Ofori-Atta initially travelled to the United States on a visa and later had to address his stay in line with local immigration rules.

“You have to contend with regularising your status because the fact that you are sick doesn’t mean that you will not obey the laws of America,” he said.

He explained that the process involved applying for adjustment of status rather than repeated visa renewals.

“You can’t reapply for a visa in America. The only way is to adjust your status so that the contention with emigrating every time will not be part of your treatment burden,” he added.

According to him, the objective was to reduce administrative challenges during medical care.

“So this is to afford him the space to be able to get himself well,” he said.
