Kenyan farmer Charles Onsombi destroyed his kitchen after returning home to find thousands of people surrounding his house, hoping to see what his wife believed was an image of the Virgin Mary on the soot-covered wall.
Onsombi had been away on an overnight trip to Mombasa when his wife, Mary, reported seeing the image while cooking in their kitchen in Getare, Kisii County.
She said the shape looked like a woman wearing a long veil with her hands held in prayer. Her claim quickly spread, drawing people from different parts of the region to the house.
