La Beach demolitions disrespect Ga people, chiefs – Senyo Hosi

Senyo Hosi has criticised the demolition of structures at La Beach, describing the manner in which the exercise was carried out as disrespectful to the Ga people and their traditional leaders.

Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile, Hosi said the demolitions had affected a community whose members had depended on the beach for generations, arguing that the authorities should have engaged them before taking action.

“The least we can get is the dignity of respect, the dignity of appreciation and honour,” he said.

He said he was disappointed to hear claims that the exercise had taken place without consultation, particularly given the historical relationship between La Beach and the people of La.

“To see my chiefs sit there in a press conference and claim a thing like this has happened without any form of consultation is depressing and is disrespectful,” he added.

Hosi stressed that the beach was not simply a stretch of coastline but a place that had long served as a centre for recreation, tourism and economic activity.

He argued that the state should recognise the contribution of the Ga people and their traditional institutions rather than handle the demolitions in a way that left them feeling disregarded.

Hosi also rejected the suggestion that the controversy should be reduced to the political interests of the local Member of Parliament.

“This is not a news conversation about somebody being your MP. This is a place about policy. It’s a place about the trajectory of our country,” he said.

He maintained that the important issue was whether the government had followed a fair and proper process in dealing with the community.
