Late ex-Savelugu MP prayed for me from his sickbed – Bawumia recounts

Former Vice-President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia recounted how the late Savelugu MP, Hon Somed Gunu, prayed for him during a hospital visit in the final days of his life.

Dr Bawumia said the experience had left a deep impression on him, adding that Gunu’s death had affected him greatly.

“The late Somed Gunu was my junior brother, and his death has really hurt me. When I visited him at Tamale Teaching Hospital while he was on his sickbed, he was praying for me. Instead, I should have been the one praying for him,” he said.

He described Gunu as a development-oriented MP who was deeply committed to Savelugu, even before he contested the constituency seat. He said Gunu had supported projects in health, education and water.

“He loved the Savelugu constituency so much. He was concerned about its development,” he said.

The NPP Flagbearer noted that Gunu was the first NPP candidate to win the Savelugu seat since 1992, securing the constituency for the party in 2016.

Speaking at the one-week Islamic Adua for the late MP, Dr Bawumia described him as patient and compassionate.

He said the late Somed Gunu had helped the party retain the seat in the 2024 parliamentary election by campaigning for its candidate, Fatahiya.

“When he did not win the elections, it really affected the party. I called him and asked him to help our sister Fatahiya win the Savelugu seat for the party. He listened to me and campaigned, and we won the 2024 parliamentary election,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia disclosed that he had assured Gunu he would have a role in his government if he became president.

He told the Gunu family he would honour that promise, noting that family members were qualified to serve.

“When I’m elected president, I will fulfil the promise,” he said.
