LGBTQ+ bill: If Akufo-Addo has signed it, we wouldn’t be here – Solomon Owusu

United Party (UP) communication, Solomon Owusu has stated that the latest controversy surrounding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill (LGBTQ+) is the result of decisions that were not taken under the previous administration.

He blamed former President Nana Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for failing to bring finality to the legislation when it first became a major national issue.

“We are at this stage because of the lackadaisical attitude of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” Mr Owusu said on JoyNews’ Newsfile.

According to him, the country would not be revisiting the matter if action had been taken in 2024.

“If they had signed this bill in 2024, I don’t think we would be here discussing this matter again,” he stated.

Owusu also drew attention to discussions at a recent African inter-parliamentary conference on family sovereignty, arguing that many African lawmakers and civil society groups remain opposed to what they see as external pressure on the continent’s cultural values.

He maintained that Parliament’s decision to pass the bill reflects sentiments widely shared across Africa and insisted that the legislation is consistent with positions taken by many leaders on the continent.
