Low-quality cement flooding market – Akwasi Nti blows alarm

The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for the Fomena Constituency, Akwasi Nti, has raised concerns about the increasing influx of low-quality cement into the Ghanaian market.

Speaking on Angel FM Kumasi, he alleged that some Chinese cement producers are replacing clinker, a key component in cement production, with quarry dust, thereby compromising quality.

“Chinese cement producers are replacing clinker with quarry dust, flooding the market with low-quality cement,” he claimed.

According to him, consumer behaviour is partly fuelling the situation, particularly in urban centres like Kumasi, where buyers often prioritise affordability over durability.

“Kumasi people like cheap things; they are always looking for affordable options, so they end up buying these types of cement, which do not last,” he stated.

He further suggested that the issue goes beyond cement, indicating a broader trend in the construction sector where materials are allegedly being altered to reduce cost at the expense of quality.

“Almost all building materials are being tampered with in order to sell them at cheaper prices,” he added.
