Mahama raises alarm over fish dried in ‘rubbish’ at Tema Newtown

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over fish being dried under what he described as unhygienic conditions at Tema Newtown, warning that the products eventually find their way onto the market.

Speaking at the Ringway Gospel Centre Assemblies of God, Mahama referred to footage recorded at the fishing community, saying it exposed conditions that should concern consumers and authorities alike.

“The fish is supposed to come into the market. These Buzstop Boys went to Tema Newtown, and if you see the rubbish there, they were drying fish. And that fish is supposed to come into the market,” he said.

Mahama said the footage showed the poor environmental conditions under which fish meant for public consumption was being processed.

According to him, the situation demonstrates the need to improve sanitation standards and strengthen the management of food processing areas to protect public health.

The President’s remarks came as he stressed the importance of maintaining hygienic environments where food is prepared and processed for consumers.
