Mahama recalls how rent issues drained him when he started married life with Lordina

President John Mahama has recounted the difficult experience he and First Lady Lordina Mahama faced when they left his father’s house to begin married life, saying the search for suitable and affordable accommodation was exhausting and nearly ruined their finances.

Mahama said the couple spent considerable time moving around Accra with estate agents before eventually finding a home at Madina New Road.

“The miles we covered with estate agents roaming the sprawling city of Accra in search of something that was suitable and affordable was a very exhausting exercise,” he said during an event.

According to the President, the financial demands associated with securing the house placed significant pressure on the couple even before they had settled into married life.

He said the combination of multiple years’ rent in advance, agency fees and an additional month’s rent paid to the agent who found the house consumed a substantial part of their finances.

“The multiple years’ rent in advance and the one month extra rent fee that is paid to the agent who found you the house almost ruined our finances even before we had started married life together,” he said.

Mahama said his experience reflected the difficulties many young Ghanaian couples continue to face when trying to secure accommodation.

“Many young Ghanaians are experiencing this same situation even as I speak today,” he said.
