Mahama’s public support has plummeted in five months – Dr Zaato

Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Joshua Zaato, has revealed the latest IEA survey should not be interpreted as a minor fluctuation in President John Mahama’s popularity.

Speaking on Joy News, Zaato argued that the decline from 68 percent approval in December 2025 to 58.9 percent in May 2026 represents a significant loss of public support.

“It is not a dip. If you lose 10 percentage points, it is not a dip. That is a drop,” he said.

The IEA survey found that while a majority of Ghanaians still approve of the President’s performance, support has declined notably over the last five months.

Zaato insisted that the size of the decline matters because it reflects changing public sentiment.

“You have 58 and 68. They are worlds apart.”

According to him, attempts to minimise the change risk overlooking genuine concerns emerging among voters.

“The report itself explains why the ratings have fallen. The signs are there.”

He argued that the figures should serve as an early warning to government rather than a reason for celebration.
