Temwa Chawinga produced another outstanding performance as Malawi defeated Egypt 3-1 in their Group C clash at the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), moving a step closer to the quarterfinals.
Fresh from their shock victory over defending champions Nigeria, the Scorchers delivered another composed display to record a second consecutive win and strengthen their qualification hopes.
Egypt threatened first in the 16th minute when Christina Salama fired wide before Malawi responded through Faith Chinzimu, whose dangerous run was stopped by the advancing goalkeeper.
Chawinga soon tested Egypt with a powerful effort before helping Malawi take the lead in the 35th minute. The striker played a perfectly weighted pass to Rose Kadzere, who finished calmly from close range.
Malawi doubled their advantage just before half-time as Chinzimu reacted quickest to volley home after her initial header had been saved.
Egypt returned for the second half with greater urgency and were handed a boost when Rose Alufandika was sent off for bringing down Habiba Hafez as she raced through on goal.
Despite playing with 10 women, Malawi continued to threaten on the counterattack and added a third goal in the 68th minute. Kadzere turned provider with a clever assist for Chawinga, who headed home with a looping finish.
Egypt responded almost immediately through substitute Eman Kassem, whose well-placed header reduced the deficit.
The North Africans pushed for another goal but were unable to break down Malawi’s disciplined defence, while the Scorchers remained dangerous on the break, with Chawinga continuing to lead the attack.
The victory takes Malawi to six points from two matches ahead of their final Group C fixture against Zambia next Wednesday.
Egypt, meanwhile, must now secure a positive result against defending champions Nigeria in their final group match to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
