Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwapem North Constituency, Hon Sammi Awuku has said the enduring legacy of former President John Evans Atta Mills lies not in physical infrastructure but in his character, compassion and leadership style.
Paying tribute to the late President in Parliament, Mr. Awuku said Prof. Mills’ greatest contribution to Ghana was the example he set through humility, love and tolerance.
“Even though he is dead and gone, he is a man you cannot remember as far as infrastructure is concerned, but one can remember him for love, passion, compassion, and character,” he said.
According to Mr. Awuku, the late President earned the admiration of many Ghanaians because of his calm disposition and ability to unite people despite political differences.
He maintained that Prof. Mills’ personal values have become his most enduring legacy and continue to inspire political leadership in Ghana.
Background
Prof. Mills served as President of Ghana from January 7, 2009, until his untimely death on July 24, 2012, at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
His passing marked the first time a sitting Ghanaian President had died in office. Asomdwee Park, the final resting place of the late President, has since become a national memorial site where Ghanaians gather annually to honour his memory and reflect on the values of peace, humility and servant-leadership that he embodied.
