Napo may be favourite, but the decision is Bawumia’s – Awal Mohammed

NPP communicator Awal Mohammed has argued that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is under no obligation to retain Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, as his running mate for a future election.

Speaking on Joy Prime, Awal said although he personally believes Napo remains the strongest option available, the final decision rests with Bawumia.

“I don’t have any doubt that NAPO will be, because he’s even my favourite. I believe that NAPO will do best,” he said.

However, he stressed that political realities can change and no position should be considered guaranteed.

According to him, there is nothing in the party’s tradition that permanently ties a presidential candidate to a particular running mate.

“I don’t think Dr Bawumia will change NAPO. But it is not binding on Dr Bawumia to still choose NAPO,” he stated.

Awal pointed to past political developments within the NPP to support his argument, noting that alliances and electoral strategies have evolved over time.

He maintained that while NAPO may currently be the preferred choice for many party supporters, the party’s flagbearer still has the authority to make a different decision if circumstances demand it.
