Economist and GIMPA lecturer, Kwasi Nyame-Baafi has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) contributed more to Ghana’s debt between 2009 and 2016 than the New Patriotic Party.
Speaking on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM, Dr. Nyame-Baafi said both political parties have played roles in the country’s rising debt levels but argued that the figures show the NDC’s impact was greater during its period in office.
“Based on the statistics, the National Democratic Congress contributed more to our debt situation from 2009 to 2016 than the New Patriotic Party,” he said.
“Both parties have contributed to the debt levels, but the current government is benefiting from the debt exchange programme, which the NPP undertook as a painful decision during their time in office.”
He added that the Mahama administration should recognise that decision. “Therefore, the Mahama administration should acknowledge the NPP for that action,” he stated.
Dr. Nyame-Baafi also challenged suggestions that Ghana is currently among the leading economies on the continent.
“The President gave the impression that Ghana is among the top economies in Africa, which I disagree with,” he said.
Providing context, he noted that Ghana’s nominal GDP in 2016 was about 219 billion cedis.
“By the time the NPP left office, the GDP had crossed one trillion,” he added.
