New meters and tariff updates: Why prepaid units are running fast

Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Dr Shafic Suleman has provided clarity on why some Ghanaian consumers are experiencing fast depletion of their ECG prepaid units.

Speaking on Hot Issues on TV3, Dr Suleman said, “They are fixing new meters…anytime they are replacing a meter, it means the old meter has a problem.

“One of the problems they identified with the old meters is that the old meters are unable to actually respond to new tariff adjustment and some are as old as from the last tariff adjustment in 2022. Those ones are the ones they are replacing.”

He added, “If they replace those meters, it takes into consideration all the tariff adjustments and it begins to read, and that’s what most new meters that have been replaced is indicating to the Ghanaian consumer.”

Dr Suleman assured consumers that the PURC is monitoring the situation closely and will take up any issues of over-billing with ECG.
