No bed syndrome: They attended to me only when they realized I was an MP – Afadjato South MP

Member of Parliament(MP) for Afadjato South Frank Afriyie has condemned the no-bed syndrome in some Ghanaian hospitals, revealing that he has had a personal experience where he was initially denied a bed in one Ghana’s most prominent hospitals but only given one when it was revealed that he was an MP.

Contributing to discussions on the issue of sick people being told there are no beds when they seek care in hospitals and therefore denied treatment( no-bed syndrome), Mr Afriyie bemoaned the discrimination exhibited by some medical persons when critically ill people seek care in hospitals.

According to him, but for the fact that his wife told the medical personnel that he was an MP, he could have died since he was unconscious.

“My wife had to tell them that the man lying there is an MP. That’s when they attended to me,” he revealed on the floor of Parliament.

The no-bed syndrome has resurfaced in the news following the death of a 28-year old man who had been refused treatment by three hospitals in Accra due to lack of beds. His death has sparked outraged.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah has assured Ghanaians that the issue will be resolved comprehensively
