Counsellor Frank Edem Adofoli has cautioned couples against marrying simply because they have spent several years together, saying the quality and direction of a relationship matter more than its duration.
The marriage expert said couples should assess whether their relationship is healthy and whether they share a clear vision for the future before deciding to marry.
“Not every relationship needs to lead to marriage, no matter how long you’ve been with a person,” he said on Changes on Joy Prime.
Adofoli explained that couples in long-term relationships may eventually begin asking questions about security, shared property, children and their plans for life together.
He said partners need to define what they want from the relationship and agree on their next steps instead of allowing years together to create an expectation of marriage.
“If he’s not defining the relationship, you know what you want and what does not align with your values and where you’re heading towards, that’s the end of that relationship,” he said.
He also warned that entering marriage without addressing problems that existed during courtship could create further difficulties later.
