New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Youth Organiser and one of the leaders of the Yɛgye yɛ sika demonstration, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, has warned that the group will extend its protests across the regions and constituencies if President John Mahama fails to act on concerns surrounding the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
He said the demonstration was necessary despite calls by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Minority in Parliament for the Foreign Affairs Minister to resign or step aside to allow investigations into alleged financial impropriety.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, Yakubu said the group would continue its campaign until the President responds to the concerns it had raised.
“It was necessary and it’s still going to be necessary, and this is not the end. It’s the beginning. It’s something that we’re going to do consistently across all the regions, including constituencies, if the President fails to act,” he said.
Yakubu accused President Mahama of failing to respond adequately to concerns about the Foreign Affairs Minister, arguing that the minister should step aside to allow investigations to proceed.
He said the opposition had already held several press conferences explaining why the minister should be removed or temporarily step aside, but the President had yet to take action.
“The Minority has spoken a lot about it. They’ve done series of press conferences explaining why there is the need for the honourable to be sacked or either step aside so investigation can go on. But the President seems not to care about whatever is happening under the Foreign Affairs Ministry,” he said.
Yakubu maintained that the group would not abandon its campaign, insisting that the concerns required a response from the President.
