NPP’s 2024 defeat was due to economic mismanagement and corruption – Ebo Buckman

United Party Deputy Director of Communications Ebo Buckman has rejected claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the 2024 election mainly because it lost parliamentary seats, arguing that economic mismanagement and corruption were central to its defeat.

Buckman said the party needed to confront the reasons voters turned against it instead of focusing its reorganisation on parliamentary representation.

“They lost majority of their seats and lost the election because of the way you mismanaged this country’s economy,” he said on TV3.

He cited corruption allegations, the National Service scandal, the collapse of indigenous banks, public borrowing and illegal mining as issues he believes damaged the party’s standing with voters.

“These are the reasons why Ghanaians went out there in their numbers to vote against you,” he said, adding that the party had wasted national resources and borrowed excessively.

Buckman also criticised the NPP’s presidential candidate, arguing that the party’s electoral problems could not be resolved simply by changing parliamentary leadership or candidates.

“The problem is not even with the parliamentary candidate. It’s your presidential candidate, a very weak, incompetent leader,” he said.

He argued that the party should have focused on choosing a more marketable presidential candidate, insisting that winning the party’s flagbearership does not automatically secure victory in a national election.

“Ghanaians will not vote for you because NPP has elected you. They look at his record,” Buckman said.
