Police arrest 32-year-old over 2016 disappearance of doctor and wife

Police have arrested 32-year-old Abraham Awendok over the disappearance of doctor Jesse Amoah and his wife, Elizabeth Amwa Esi, who went missing in April 2016.

The Ghana Police Service says Awendok, who previously worked as an “airline boy” for the couple, allegedly m0rdered them, took their phones, money and vehicle, and fled to the United Arab Emirates.

He was declared wanted through an Interpol Red Notice and deported to Ghana on August 30, 2026.

Police said Awendok has admitted to the m0rder during interrogation. The couple’s vehicle has also been recovered, while their remains were conveyed to the Police Hospital for preservation and autopsy.

Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu disclosed the arrest at a press briefing on Monday, September 7, as he outlined a series of intelligence-led operations across the country.

The operations also resulted in arrests and firearm recoveries linked to suspected robbery activities in Greater Accra, the Western Region and the Northern Region.

In separate operations between June and July, police recovered eight AK-47 rifles, an SMG rifle and two foreign pistols.

Yohunu credited intelligence from the public, police officers and government support, including armoured vehicles, for the results.

“The provision of armoured vehicles, especially the pickups, has been instrumental in our successes,” he said.
