Ramzi Inusah questions 2018 decision to remove NACOC from port inspection team

Dr. Ramzi Inusah, Director of Research for the United Party, has questioned the 2018 decision to remove the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) from the Joint Security Agency Inspection Team at Ghana’s ports.

His comments come as Ghana faces renewed scrutiny over the seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine in France from a container shipped from Ghana.

President John Dramani Mahama received a security briefing on the case on September 17, 2026. Ten people are currently being held as investigations continue, including four officers from the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority.

Inusah said the 2018 decision needs to be examined, particularly in light of Ghana’s criminality figures.

“If you look at Ghana’s score on organised crime, which the trafficking and trade of illicit drugs like cocaine, heroin, and cannabis was also cited in there, from 2019, the score, the criminality score was 4.9,” he said.

He said the score increased to 6.01 in 2021.

“So between 2018 to 2021, our criminality score rose,” Inusah said on TV3’s New Day.

According to him, the 6.0 score remained the highest recorded between 2019 and 2025.

Inusah therefore described the decision to remove NACOC from the inspection team as a bad one and said those responsible should explain why it was taken.

“So that has been a very bad decision, which they have to explain to us why they took such cabinet decision,” he said.
