Ross Owusu backs calls for Emelia Agbenyo to resign as EC deputy chair

A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP), Ross Owusu, legal team, has backed calls for Emelia Afi Agbenyo to resign as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, arguing that her departure could help restore public confidence in the institution.

Owusu said the controversy surrounding Agbenyo’s appointment should be addressed before the country enters the processes leading to the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints on October 17, 2026, he said the NPP supported calls by the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) for Agbenyo to step aside.

“I think the NPP supports this call, and I think it will be in the interest of our democracy,” he said.

Owusu argued that the issue was not whether Agbenyo was professionally qualified or whether the President had the constitutional power to appoint her, but whether the appointment could inspire confidence in the EC’s impartiality.

He said the President should consider asking her to resign rather than seeking to remove her through a formal process.

“To sack her would warrant a certain constitutional process to be activated. So I think in this regard she has to be spoken to,” he said.

Owusu added that the decision would be in the interest of both the EC and President Mahama, who is expected to leave office in 2028.

“I think the President should take a second look at it because posterity will definitely judge him,” he said.

He urged the President to listen to public concerns and take steps to protect the Commission’s reputation before the next election.
