Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has linked the difficulty in meeting the bail conditions imposed on Dennis Miracles Aboagye to Ghana’s challenges with property registration.
Speaking on Adom FM, Kpebu said many property owners in Ghana have valuable assets but lack proper documentation, making it difficult for such properties to be accepted as surety in court cases.
“We are not learning lessons from our own society. We have a big problem with registration. There are a lot of people with about 20 houses, but none of them has been registered, even though tenants are living in them,” he said.
According to him, the situation affects people trying to secure bail because courts and investigative bodies often require registered properties as proof.
He said in the case of Miracles Aboagye, some influential members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could potentially have provided several properties as surety, but the registration requirement creates a challenge.
“Several NPP gurus could have mobilised up to 50 houses to secure his bail, but once we mention justification, it becomes a problem because these houses might not be registered,” Kpebu said.
Aboagye, a former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation, was granted bail with conditions following investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
