Sophia Akuffo did not state reasons for resignation – Kwakye Ofosu Clarifies

Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has clarified that former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo did not state any reason for her resignation from the Council of State, countering public speculation around her exit.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, June 15, he stressed that her resignation letter, submitted in September 2025, contained no explanation for her decision.

He said, “I can confirm that Justice Sophia Akuffo resigned from her position as a member of the Council of State. She submitted a letter to the President indicating her desire to resign. She did not disclose the reason for wanting to resign.”

According to him, the Presidency initially held off on accepting the resignation to allow for consultations initiated by the Council of State.

“When the President received the letter, he was required to indicate acceptance, but at the request of the Council of State, he held on so they could engage her to find out if there were grievances and whether they could be addressed,” he explained.

He added that after those engagements, the Council reported back that no issues were raised that required further action.

“They got back and said they had engaged her and, as far as they were concerned, the resignation could be accepted,” he said.
