Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has said earnings from Ghana’s participation in international sporting competitions will be paid into a dedicated Sports Fund rather than left for individual federations to spend at their discretion.
He said the fund had been established under an Act intended to provide a formal structure for managing money earned from international competitions.
Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues with Keminni Amanor, Adams said the arrangement was designed to address concerns about what Ghana receives from competing on the international stage.
“People talked about we have been to World Cups and they don’t see what we get from the World Cups or our participation,” he said.
He explained that the government had introduced a legal framework to ensure that the proceeds were channelled into the fund.
“What the NDC administration did under His Excellency President Mahama is to establish a Sports Fund backed by an Act,” Adams said.
He stressed that the law covered all earnings from international competitions, regardless of the amount involved.
“The Act states clearly that every dollar, every cent, every pesewa that we earn from our participation in international competitions will go into the fund,” he said.
According to Adams, the arrangement would end the practice of allowing individual sporting federations to decide independently how such proceeds should be used.
“So it is no longer going to go into the hands of any federation, including the GFA, for them to decide what they want to use it for,” he said.
The minister presented the fund as part of the government’s broader effort to improve financial accountability in sports, alongside the disclosure of budget estimates and the review of expenditure on the Black Stars.
