NPP communicator Awal Mohammed has questioned the basis of the state’s investigation into Dennis Miracles Aboagye, arguing that the allegations presented in court do not match the GHC55 million figure initially announced by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
In a Facebook post, Awal said EOCO’s original statement indicated that Aboagye was being investigated over an alleged GHC55 million.
He noted that after Aboagye denied the allegations in interviews and on social media, Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai also maintained in a TV3 interview that the amount under investigation was GHC55 million.
However, Mohammed said reports on the court application to freeze Aboagye’s bank accounts and assets cited allegations involving a fictitious GHC5.87 million procurement, an unauthorised GHC19 million public investment and an unaccounted-for GH¢4.3 million payment to GAPTE.
“When you add these figures together, they total GHC29.17 million, not the GHC55 million originally publicised,” he wrote.
Mohammed argued that the discrepancy undermines the state’s case.
“Clearly, the state is engaged in a fishing expedition to find faults where none exists,” he said.
He further claimed that the investigation was intended to weaken Aboagye politically.
“Their objective is to either cripple him so he cannot hold the government accountable or, if he does, to tarnish his image so he appears completely uncredible,” Mohammed stated.
He called on supporters to participate in the NPP’s “Save Our Democracy” demonstration scheduled for Thursday, saying the case illustrates what he described as an abuse of state power.
