The land belongs to the Golden Stool – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II speaks on KNUST feud

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has cautioned against legal and private claims over lands belonging to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), stating that the properties are legally reserved for the institution.

He made the remarks during KNUST’s 75th anniversary events, where he addressed ongoing disputes involving portions of university land.

“The land belongs to the Golden Stool. The chiefs are caretakers; no family owns the land,” he said.

He warned that attempts to challenge ownership in court, particularly where land could be resold after judgments, should be avoided.

“Anyone who supports such cases and goes to court just because they can get judgment over more than 1,000 acres of university land and sell it, I say no,” he said.

Otumfuo also raised concerns about repeated litigation involving KNUST lands, questioning the role of some legal practitioners in accepting such cases.

He suggested that there may be coordination between individuals inside and outside the university in pursuing land claims, and urged caution from professionals handling such matters.

“There is collusion both within and outside,” he said, adding that lawyers should apply due diligence when approached with claims over institutional property.

The comments were delivered as part of anniversary engagements marking 75 years of the university.
