President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his government has cleared the outstanding debt owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), saying Ghana is now up to date with payments for electricity supplied.
Addressing Ghanaians in Moscow, Russia, the President said his administration inherited about US$1.7 billion in unpaid obligations to IPPs, alongside arrears for gas supplied from the Jubilee Field and by ENI.
He explained that the accumulated debts had created tensions in the energy sector, with some power producers threatening to suspend electricity supply over delayed payments.
Mahama said the government had since resolved the payment challenges and was now paying for electricity supplied by the producers.
“I’m happy to announce that we have cleared the IPP debt. That is, we are current. Any energy they supply today, we’re paying them,” he said.
The President also assured Ghanaians that the country had adequate electricity supply, insisting that the power challenges associated with dumsor were no longer an issue.
“With regard to energy, I can report that there’s no dumsor in Ghana. Everybody has adequate power. And that’s one of the areas that has been quite dramatic in terms of its management,” he added.
